On Tuesday we spent the whole class working on our Old Masters drawings. I started drawing the lines in charcoal rather than in pencil. I like using charcoal a lot, the only thing is I wish I could erase a little more. Francoise Boucher, the original artist, did not use that much shading, just a lot of lines, which I am trying to replicate. He also does a lot of really random and crazy marks which is kind of hard to copy, but I'm working on it! ARWA ABOUON, "I'm Sorry / I Forgive You", Archival photograph, 30 x 40 inches, Edition 7. This piece of artwork was found at Reynolds Gallery in the exhibit "Missed Connection." This exhibit was about "artists from five countries visually expressing the challenges of interpersonal and cross-cultural communication." I thought that the piece of artwork above was beautiful. There was one just like it but the man was kissing the woman's head and there were similar, but different black designs. They were both really simple but detailed and I loved them.
This week for some reason I got really into drawing animals. I drew a lot of animals in my sketchbook including lots of lions, a bunny, a bear, some giraffes, and probably more. I also painted a little this weekend. I was looking through some paintings online and I found one I really liked and decided to try to paint it. It's the picture above. I'm not that far, but I'm going to keep working on it this week or next weekend. Throughout this week I worked a little on the portraits of Hazel and me, although they are both still not done. I started the portraits of Grace and Nora. I like Graces because hers looked like her from the moment I started it, just from the outline. I haven't gone into very much detail in it yet though. Nora's is pretty good, but she looks a little younger in the portrait than she does in real life. I've also been painting a little this week. During this week I decided to start doing portraits of me and all of my sisters in my sketchbook. I started with a self portrait. At first it didn't look like me very much, but as I kept working it actually got a lot better and now I can actually see the resemblance. The thing I need to work on most is my mouth, which I just can't get right. I kept trying to draw it and then I'd erase it, so now the paper at that area is kind of weak, so I need to practice on another piece of paper before drawing it on there. I also got pretty far on a portrait of my sister Hazel. It looks pretty much like her, but I need to fix her mouth too which is a little bit lopsided. I printed out the pictures of my other sisters, Grace and Nora, but I haven't actually started their portraits. |
