Since we've been learning about and creating our own sculptures in class and at home, I decided to research some sculptors. I came across Michael Ulman. I was drawn to his work because he does a lot of sculptures of cars out of found objects, which was exactly what I was planning to do for my home sculpture project!! He also does motorcycles and other vehicles. His challenge is to make sculptures that evoke the sound, movement, and raw power of the vehicles. He uses objects from dumpsters, junkyards, trash heaps, flea markets, etc. The car above was built with parts of a mailbox. I think it is so amazing that he can make such great sculptures from things other people would consider trash. He is definitely an inspiration to me as I am working on my home project. This weekend I was in Dallas for my Great Aunt's 100th birthday! While we were there my mom and dad and I went to the DMA to look at some art. There was a huge variety of things. They had modern art, old art, paintings, and sculptures. I really loved looking around and checking things out. I thought it was interesting to see the contrast between the modern art section of the museum and the section with older art. In the modern section I saw more 3d pieces and simple, but creative pieces, whereas in the older section the pieces I saw were less creative but more detailed and intricate. I took a lot of pictures, but I chose those two to show the contrast between modern and older art that I saw. |
